20 Common Mistakes Made By New Bloggers

48,375254

With a new blog starting every half second and with more than 175 million blogs on the Internet (is anyone still keeping track?) sometimes for a new blogger, it can be hard to stand out from the crowd.

It’s easy to feel like a little fish in a big pond until you start seeing people other than your Mom and your sister leaving comments and subscribing to your RSS feed. There are some things you can do; however, to accelerate your blogging learning curve.

I never had a blog before I started writing for Bit Rebels and Ink Rebels, so I was very fortunate to learn these things right from the beginning by watching @Minervity and @mistygirlph, but many people have to learn these things on their own, and those are the people I’m hoping to help with this post.

Of course, as usual, everything I’ve written is just my opinion. Blogging is very personal, an art form really, and you can only take someone else’s advice to a certain extent. At some point, you have to express your own creative license. There is no right or wrong way to blog, this is just a list of common mistakes that I see people make which could be affecting why they aren’t experiencing the success they seek.

1. Not owning your own domain
If you want to have complete control over your blog, it is very important to own your own domain and get your own hosting. Many people won’t take a hosted blog seriously because xxxxx.blogspot.com just doesn’t look very good. Also, the search engines love real URLs. In my opinion, this is very important.

2. Not including an author bio, picture and easy to use comment section
An author’s bio adds credibility to your blog. I’m not saying you have to have a whole “about” page, although that is nice, I’m just saying to give your readers a couple of sentences explaining who you are and what you are all about. It only takes a few minutes to put it together. A picture of you (preferably a head shot) ties it all together with a personal touch. It shows you are a real person. An easy to use comment section is also important because you don’t want your readers to think it is a hassle to leave a comment. If you make them register and go through all kinds of red tape to leave a simple comment, they just won’t do it.

3. Having a hard to find RSS button and social media buttons, or using only text links for these instead of using pretty buttons

There are so many places you can go online to get free buttons or you can design your own. Here are links to examples to each: Free RSS buttons, Free Twitter icons, How To Create A Set Of Stylish Social Bookmarking Buttons

4. Not using permalinks for your posts
In case you don’t know what a permalink is, it’s the link to the actual page for a specific post. How many times have you clicked on a link for a post, but it just takes you to the home page and then you have to find that particular post? That happens to me a lot. Again, you don’t want to inconvenience your readers, use permalinks so your readers don’t have to do all that work. You can learn more about permalinks here: http://www.bloggingbasics101.com

5. Not learning basic HTML

I didn’t learn any basic HTML until I had been writing on Bit Rebels for several months. Wow did it ever make a difference when I started putting effort into the formatting. You really only have to learn a few tags to make a huge difference. You can read about this all day long on the internet. Here are three resources for you that might be helpful: HTML Tag Quick Reference Guide, HTML Basic, HTML Color Codes

6. Broken or meaningless links
Please be sure to double check all your links before publishing your article. It looks sloppy when links are unnecessarily broken. Also, be sure to let people know what the link is for in your post. There is nothing worse than taking the time to click on a link that goes to something irrelevant that we don’t want to see. Again, this is an inconvenience to your readers, and you don’t want to set that precedence.

7. Choosing a poorly designed blog or not using strong graphics
The way your blog looks is one of the most important aspects of your blog. People will not read content on a blog that is not visually appealing. Don’t mistake this as it having to be fancy, some of my favorite blogs use minimal design, but they are clean and sharp and very nice to look at.

8. Stealing blog content
This is a sensitive subject because I know many times it happens by accident. The truth is, we all get some of our blogging ideas from somewhere else on the Internet. The thing that sometimes new bloggers do not understand is that it is not okay to copy and paste the article into their own blog even if they put a little link at the bottom. It’s fine to take the idea and put your own spin on it; we all do that, but don’t just copy and paste it. I wrote this article a while back: How To: Be Active On Twitter Without Getting Burned Out and it has been copied so many times by people that change the title slightly but copy and paste the article. That is called stealing.

9. Not posting articles consistently
Our articles on Bit Rebels are updated every four hours; our articles on this blog are updated every three days. Of course, the more frequently you update your blog the better; however, it is more important to just be consistent and update as often as you say you will. Keep your commitment on this or you will lose readers. You can learn tips about how to be a more consistent blogger by reading this article: Learn How To Blog Like A Pro

10. Not commenting and reciprocating on other blogs
Many times new bloggers do not realize this, but when you give more than you get, you end up reaching your goals much faster. Giving back to the blogging community is very important. Leaving insightful comments and opinions will invite people to do the same for you, plus, by leaving a link to your own blog along with each comment, you’ll also attract more visitors.

11. No personality in the writing
New bloggers are often so afraid of getting a negative comment that they won’t show any personality in their writing. First of all, negative comments are not bad. You can read more about that here: 5 Reasons To Smile When You Get A Negative Blog Comment Secondly, if you want to shine brightly in that crowd of millions of blogs, then you have to stand for something! It’s okay to show some personality, don’t be afraid, your readers might love you or hate you, but either way, it’s all good! ;)

12. Blogging with conditions
This mistake is heart breaking to me really. So many new bloggers say something like this to themselves, “I will do this for two months, and if I don’t see any results, I will quit.” If you have that attitude, you will surely be setting yourself up for failure. Blog for the joy of writing. If you don’t like writing, it will show in your posts, so don’t blog. It’s that simple. I love writing and if I could, I would spend every day all day writing even if I never made a dime. You don’t have to love writing as much as I do, but don’t hate it. If you do, find something else to fill that time.

13. Comparing yourself to others
Nothing can be more discouraging to a new blogger than comparing their number of pageviews, RTs, etc… to another blogger. Don’t do that. Just set your own personal goals and stretch yourself with each post. Swim in your own lane. Don’t look to the side, just look straight ahead and keep moving forward.

14. Over self promotion on social media
Twitter is a great place to share links to your blog, but be careful not to become one of those people that everyone avoids because they never engage or share any information other than their posts. Social media is a place to be social and make friends, don’t forget that critical element.

15. Not responding to readers comments
When I first started blogging, I was afraid to respond to reader comments. It sounds silly now, and I have no idea why I felt that way, but wow, what a mistake. Respond to your readers. Nowadays, I have complete conversations in the comments on blogs almost daily. It is a wonderful way to get to know your readers and make new friends. Also, they will enjoy coming back to your blog knowing you care enough to read their comments and respond. Many bloggers do not do that, so you’ll definitely set yourself apart from the crowd.

16. Apologizing
I always see new bloggers apologizing in their posts and I never see seasoned bloggers do it. Quite frankly, it’s annoying to go to a post and read three paragraphs about why you are sorry for not writing more frequently. Don’t do it because that stays out there on the Internet forever to annoy anyone that stumbles across it. There is no need to ever apologize and if you feel the need to give more because you’ve been away, then write a spectacular post, but don’t say you are sorry.

17. Choosing a domain name that is long or hard to spell
Now that we‘ve established the importance of having your own domain, be sure to choose one that isn’t too long or hard to spell. I have a friend with a domain name with the word “privileges” in it. He learned this the hard way because nobody seems to know how to spell that word. Make it super simple if you can, it’s the best way to go.

18. Writing posts that are too long
There is nothing wrong with long posts if you break it up so that your readers can scan it. This is called “making your content accessible.” If you just write pure text in long blocks, you’ll lose a lot of readers because they will get bored. So, it isn’t so much the length of the entire post, it’s more the length of each section or paragraph. Bullet points and headlines within the post are good because it breaks up the length. This rule does not apply if it’s an in depth tutorial or something that should be long.

19. Choosing a background that is annoying, makes text difficult to read or plays music
You may not care if you get a lot of visitors and in that case, blast music if that makes you happy; however, if you care about attracting visitors, then don’t do it. You will inevitably have a different taste in music than your readers and it could keep them from ever coming back.

20. Being a know-it-all or being grumpy
Humility goes a long way in life, and it goes a long way in blogging. Be humble. Admit when you are wrong and eat a slice of humble pie every now and then. It will show you are human and your readers will love you more. You become a real person when you show some love and humility. Also, please don’t be grumpy. You will only attract grumpy readers, and you certainly don’t want that. ;)

I hope this post has helped some new bloggers with their technique. I am always available to answer any questions you might have. You can contact me anytime on Twitter at @adamsconsulting or you can email me at diana@bitrebels.com. I wish you the best and happy blogging!

Ugh, I strongly dislike perpetual apologizers! It’s like the old saying goes: if you don’t believe in yourself, no one else will.

As for posting consistently, you should throw in the link to your outstanding article, “Learn How To Blog Like A Pro.” That post was pivotal for me in making myself commit to daily posts (sleep be damned).

But HTML.. Brr! I hate the stuff!

I have a love hate relationship with HTML. I hate it when I’m learning it, but then when I try something that works, it’s like the best feeling in the whole world and suddenly I love it. Then, it’s time to learn something new with it, and I get that hate feeling again. Haha! So, I know what you mean, but it’s worth learning, it just makes such a huge difference when your posts are formatted beautifully. :)

Good Morning Diana

Great blog post. I need to brush up
on my html. Some thing I’ve a love hate
for to.

I’ve to say some of the blogs I’ve found
with music are ok. Some times the music on
the site can tell you a little bit more about
the person blog your reading.

Like mine I’ve use music video but I love music to. My first blog has the little engine that could and has text above how I’m feeling. My last blog has take me out to the ball game. Reason because I was thrown so many curve balls that month. Hoping to hit a home run this month but not looking that way.

I’ve about 4 or 5 blogs done but still not ready to put them out there. I need to do some more things first.

Diana you will be the first person to get my link to my blog. You have inspired me and encouraged me allot. Thank you

Thanks very much for this post! I found it really helpful. I have been writing a sims blog for quite a while but recently started a travel blog as well and I am trying to get more readers but it isn’t as easy as in the sims community.

I hadn’t thought about it before, but I tend to apologise a lot on my older blog. That could actually be really annoying so I am going to try and do that less (hehe… I sound vaguely apologetic now about being too apologetic :D )

Thanks for your great tips and the great links too!

Hi Diana,

Loved these tips!

Thanks for the HTML links, I checked them out quickly and they look pretty user friendly. I’ve been wanting to learn HTML for a while now, but have been too intimidated to start.

I was shocked at your experience of having your content stolen, not so much that it was stolen, I know that happens occasionally, but that it happened on multiple occasions. What a bummer.

I enjoyed the post, this blog is becoming a great resource!

Cheers

[Reply]

Diana Adams Reply:

Hello Dave! Thank you, as always for your comments. Don’t be intimidated by HTML, it looks scary, but you can take it on. LOL The best part is, when you mess it up, you can delete it, take a break, and pick it up again another day. That is what I have done, and it seems to be working. :)

Oh, and about the content being stolen, you know, now when that happens, I take it as a compliment. I mean, it truly isn’t worth the negative energy to make a big deal out of it. What’s the old saying? Something about “copying is the best form of flattering.” I may change my mind if the frequency changes, but for now, I don’t get hung up on it. ;)

Thank you so much Diana; I really love all of your posts! I’ve learned so much from Bit Rebels and I’m really excited about the new Ink Rebels – what a fantastic resource.

Up till now, I’ve been doing lots of reading/lurking, and no commenting… but I’m taking #10 to heart and vowing to comment more!! I’ve gotta tell you, I feel like ripping out my hair with all of the time I’ve spent researching HTML, design, and working on the functional and graphic aspects of my site (and it’s STILL not the way I’d like it)! Which leaves little to no time for writing content, ugh! I have to keep repeating to myself: it’s all a work in progress, and the name of the game is patience and perseverance.

I would love your thoughts (maybe in a post?) on time management – especially for new blogger-writers; for example, how does one effectively balance time spent on blog design, article research, actual writing, and editing?

Thanks so much Diana; I find your posts consistently encouraging and inspiring!

[Reply]

Diana Adams Reply:

Amy,

Thank you again. I no longer focus on managing time because then I always seem to set myself up for failure. Instead, I manage my energy. When my energy is correct, I seem to have all the time in the world for the things I’m passionate about. It was really a mental shift for me and sooooo much nicer.

Oh…….. and I’m right there with you about HTML. I just noticed I have a gray hair on the top of my head and I’m convinced that HTML put it there. Hahahaha!!

Thank you for your kind words about Ink Rebels and Bit Rebels. You have no idea how much that means to all of us. :)

Hi Diana. I love this post. I’m the social media cheerleader for my colleagues, but I’m still a beginner myself. I’m rearranging my schedule today so I can spend some time reading your posts about blogging.

What I’m looking for now is sort of a template for a blog post, just to get me started. I could use a tool like this to launch each idea without floundering in the writing process forever on each post.

I have 150 ideas for my blog right now and I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed since each post takes me so long! Any advice? From reading this post, I’m thinking you’ve already posted about this!

Great listing. All of these are SO true especially the one about giving back to the community. So many bloggers try and just push their own junk without ever giving anything back in return. Its not a one way street!

Also, I think a LOT of people compare themselves to others. Its a huge problem! We all really have to look deep within ourselves and found US. We’re awesome! We should recognise that! Obviously it is important to stand out from the crowd and there are so many people that do that so well, however being yourself is one of the best ways to differentiate yourself from the rest of the pack. End of story.

This is my second attempt at a blog. I used to keep one in about 2005 but I found that it was hard to find my voice. I agree that some people are too cautious. It’s my blog and I should be able to talk about my interests and provide my opinions.
I will be bookmarking these suggestions.

You know what might help you Scott? When you write your post, forget about the fact that people you don’t know will read it. Pretend like you are writing something that only your best friend will read. It will take away a lot of those feelings you are describing about not being able to find your voice. HTML seems to be the thorn in everyone’s side. Perhaps I should write a post about basic HTML. :)

Use (Center Alignment) for my Articles Posted on

that all of that Post, that I’ve made on my own Blog is – some Text shifted to the Left, Some is
still centered, as it was created in (Front Page).

My desire in using the (Front Page Editor) to create that Post, is all (Centered) for the Article
and then Paste Into my Blog. Hoping this helps to explain my like of understanding as to all not being as I created the Post in (Front Page Editor)
Centered, to appear the same on my Blog.

My Hope was that it would appear as we planned, from (Front Page Editor) into Our Blog Post. Can You see the uneven layout, once we have Saved and POSTED it at our Blog? Thank You Again Diana. Rejoice-Be Blessed Always…Peace!

This article is very informational and you hit the right points for newboes. I personally enjoyed reading this article because some of the frequently asked questions about those starting off was all answered in this article. The point that was mainly so true and I couldn’t say better was section about stealing content. There are so many newbies starting blogs and stealing content which hurts there reputation and can leas to some serious copyright issues which is the worse thing a new blogger what’s to get in. Well overall great article and I look forward to your next one. ;)

[Reply]

Diana Adams Reply:

Wow, thank you very much. Yep, that stealing content thing is kinda crazy though because so many times I know it is an accident. I think many times it just comes down to educating new bloggers about what is appropriate.

It’s kind of like on Twitter when someone brand new doesn’t understand what a retweet is so they leave off the RT from the tweet. Then they learn and it’s all good. You are right though, it can mess with someone’s reputation while they are learning the process.

I appreciate your insight and look forward to seeing you again! ;)

Hi Diana,

I wrote a blog for a daily newspaper for four years before launching my own blog. It’s fun, but also there’s so much to learn. These are great tips in a wonderful written post.

I would also recommend new bloggers register their blog with Technorati and promote it using Feedburner and Google analytics tools. Google also gives an option to make a blog a “creative commons” blog giving up rights to any copyrighted material. I did not check that box because I’m not ready yet to give my content away for free for anyone to use. It’s unfortunate that some people stole your content. I think people need to value the printed word more and the effort that goes into creating something original. Writing is one of the most difficult tasks people can do. They should appreciate and acknowledge those who do it well.

And on that note, I appreciate your post.

Thanks again,

Laura

” because xxxxx.blogspot.com just doesn’t look very good. Also, the search engines love real URLs. In my opinion, this is very important. ”

Yes it doesn’t look very good… but its a real url and search engine especially google loves it because blogspot is a service by google. I used to have it too so speaking by experience..

They place Adsense on their blog just as it launches to they get frustrated from lack of revenue and they are hurting themselves because they are driving away visitors for pennies on the click.

Diana, good post. On my personal blog, I have been guilty of virtually everyone of these mistakes. Now that I work for clients as an Internet marketer, I am making sure I do not make these mistakes for them

One quick addition is, try and stay on topic. If you blog about your business, product, or passion, try to stay in the ballpark. Personal blogs are just that, personal. But if you are blogging with a purpose, keep this in mind. It is better for your readers.

Keep up the good blogging. John

I’m new to blogging for our eccomerce website. I’m having a hard time come up with tings to write about. We do custom embroidery but why in the world would our potential customer want to subscribe to my blog. Its really not a nich market either. I’m able to get a little traffic from the couple posts I’ve done but none have resulted in any purchases. Does anybody have any suggestions for me as I’m new to blogging. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

[Reply]

Barbara Shepler Reply:

Joey, I’d suggest writing blog posts that would appeal to your potential customers. Do you specialize in a product area, such as local team sports jerseys? If so, you might find interesting things to say about the history of team names, how to get sponsorship for teams, etc. Figure out who your customers are and engage them before they know they need your service.

What is the benefit to your customers to buy from you rather than your competition? How should they compare services? You may never be able to peg any order to any blog post, but the totality of your writing can educate your potential customers and entice them to contact you for more information.

Plan on writing regularly without any expectation of sales. Write for your customers while bringing the topic around to what you can offer them in the end. As you have more posts with keywords that your customers are interested in, the traffic will come.

I just took a moment to check your blog, and I like the early posts a lot. As someone who has used direct printing from a large online service, I’m very pleased to find your company as an alternative. Do more on your affordable, one-off and small run services. That’s an area where you can specialize. Speak to your potential customers rather than your competitors and you’ll be fine.

Fantastic article, wish I knew these things when I started. I used to be scared to reply to comments as well on my blogs and also of showing too much personality in my posts. When I first started, my first site was a gaming news site with forums and even now I have many news blogs, mostly related to tech and gadgets. But when I first started, I tried to just write the facts, the news, without getting personal but, now I understand, it’s ok to add personality to your posts and I enjoy reading others posts where their personality shows through :) .

I haven’t had an about me page since my first blog though and that’s because it was built in but, I’m slowly working on adding it to all my blogs.

With regards to 6, broken links, I’ve been guilty of this but, I now have a wordpress plugin that checks for broken links and images (and it only found one :D ). Aptly named “Broken Links”. It also checks links from comments. Quite often I have someone leave a comment and the url as “http://yahoo” for example.

Following you on Twitter as well now, must already be following BitRebels :) .

This is such a great post – all of these points are so true in a lot of ways. The humble pie is very important, because you definitely don’t want to come off like you’re the authority on anything. That will only push people away… you can be opinionated, but leave what you say open, and say it nicely enough so that you don’t come off like a butt head.

Particularly about comments, both in reply on my blog and on other peoples posts, apart from getting you noticed it’s so much more fun interacting with people. Also allowing your personality to come through is very important, I didn’t want to add my name when I started out, probably more comfortable hiding behind a non human persona, big mistake.

This is really a great post, what I found more interesting is your way to give advices adding always related sources to go in depth with the problem. This is a good way of blogging, because it gives to the reader a real possibility to learn something.
I think that one of the most important rule for bloggers is to share knowledge and experience, every post should be a gift that every blogger give to his/her reader and in this period in which the list post are so popular finding one that is not a simple “what to do” but a “what to do and WHY” is great.

Thank you very much.

Most of these things are common sense items, but they’re not always things that we think of on our own. Reading this gave me some “duh!” moments! Again, great post. Thanks!

Yup, as said by many before and above me, there are some excellent ideas in there. The one about saying sorry struck the biggest chord. I guess with new blogs our human instinct is to be the over-bearing host. And that never goes down too well at parties either, does it!
I have a new blog / site I’m just launching. It’s to raise awareness for a group of four of us in the UK; we’re TA soldiers in a medical regiment, and are doing marathons, blindfolded, to raise money for forces’ charities. It’s sadly needed nowadays.
If there’s any more tips – or reminders if I forget to apply some of the aforementioned principles – I’d be glad to hear them.
And to hear about some of your successes and projects, too.

All the best
James

Consistency is my biggest hurdle. I have times when I get three articles up a day for a week and a half, and then I’m lucky if I have time for one for the next two weeks. Structure is the key for me. The weeks when I get three up a day are the weeks when I am available at all three of my predetermined posting times. If I miss one on any given day I tend to lose control for a few days.

I’m pretty sure I have all the bases covered now! heh. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and insight. Most of your article I tell my clients day in and day out. You’d be surprised that the simpliest thing like responding to a comment goes completely unanswered. Or even better, someone registers a name that only G-d himself would be able to remember. Oy vey…some of the stories I could tell…if only I had enough time to write them all down and publish it into a book and then sell it online…hey wait…ummm…

heh.

Thanks again and keep writing…we’ll keep reading!

Outstanding advice, Diana. Succinct and relevant – the way advice should be.

I’d like to offer my perspective on Point No. 8: stealing blog content. Of course, I am dead set against it on both ethical and legal grounds. The nature of the Internet is such that it is designed to allow people to share great content. But it can, and should, be done in a way that gives full credit to the original writer.

That is what I do for all my posts in which I reference another article. I provide a link to the original and quote excerpts as appropriate.

There is one case, however, where I do paste the entire article of the original author: posts by Seth Godin that are relevant for public speaking and presentations (the focus of my blog).

I do so, because Seth has made it clear in numerous pronouncements that he wants people to spread the word about his ideas provided that (a) they do not pawn them off as their own; (b) they do not modify them; and (c) they do not charge for them.

Here’s just one example from one of his documents:

“You are given the unlimited right to print this manifesto and to distribute it electronically (via email, your website, or any other means). You can print out pages and put them in your favorite coffee shop’s windows or your doctor’s
waiting room. You can transcribe the author’s words onto the sidewalk, or you can hand out copies to everyone you meet. You may not alter this manifesto in any way, though, and you may not
charge for it.”

So whenever I do a post on something that he has written – I have a category devoted to him – I start with a paragraph that says who he is and that provides links to his website, blog and Squidoo Lens. I then reference his relevant post by date; give my impressions on what he has said and whether I agree or not and why; and then reproduce his post with the title and his name.

Here’s an example: http://wp.me/pwfa1-ZW

This approach helps me create a post from time to time, helps spread Seth’s ideas, and drives some traffic to his site. I also know that several people with whom I have been in contact have also bought some of his books after reading my posts or otherwise being in contact with me.

Ultimately, the key thing is to give full credit where credit is due, and definitely not like what has been done with your Twitter article.

Cheers!

John

I am an “old” blogger, a Jesuit priest blogging way before Pope Benedict XVI announced it encouraging priests to blog. I have learned some of these things the hard way when I started blogging in 2005.

But your article has taught me more: like the use of permalinks, how to promote without being “too overly self-promoting” etc.

And for all of these, I am so grateful. Keep writing. And I am surely be one of those who are excited for your new post.

I’ve been blogging for just over a year and really needed these tips! My biggest challenge is finding time to write every day. Sometimes, the writing comes easy…other times I feel like I have no inspiration at all. I’m starting to keep a file, like you suggested, of things that are of interest that I could write about in the future. I know this will help.
